There’s something about the beginning of a new homeschool year that always makes me reflective.

When I first started homeschooling, I wanted to have the whole year figured out before we even began.

And when I say figured out, I mean figured out.

I had color-coded folders for every week of the school year, with worksheets already torn out and carefully organized.

I had a plan.

Then I met actual homeschool life.

Some lessons took longer than I expected. Others we flew through. An interesting question turned into a three-day rabbit trail. Someone needed a slower morning. The seasons changed, our energy changed, and eventually I realized:

A good homeschool plan needs to give you direction without locking you in.

This year, I’m experiencing back-to-homeschool from a very different place.

I recently helped launch my oldest into technical college.

There were years when I honestly wondered if we would ever get here. His path didn't look like the one I might have mapped out for him when he was younger. He needed the gift of time. Time to grow, time to figure out what interested him, and time for the right opportunities to find him.

And they did.

Now I'm homeschooling just one as my youngest finishes her senior year while dual enrolling in online college classes.

It's a very different back-to-school season from those years of color-coded folders.

And looking back, I'm so thankful I learned to hold our plans loosely.

I'm thankful for the rabbit trails.

I'm thankful we could slow down when someone needed more time and move ahead when they were ready.

I'm thankful we could change direction when something wasn't working and make room for opportunities I never could have put on a calendar at the beginning of the year.

The plan was there to support our homeschool, not to dictate it.
