Inspiration inside. open me!

Hi Reader!

It’s been a hard week over here.

Sickness going around. Cancelled plans. More takeout than I’d like to admit. Trying to catch up on everything that didn’t get done.

And if I’m honest? The noise of the world feels loud right now. Media. Opinions. So much to process. So much to do.

But in the middle of all that… I got inspired.

My daughter’s best friend and her entire family got sick this week. She missed youth group. Missed theater practice. Couldn’t even pick up her script.

So my daughter picked it up for her. But she didn’t want to just drop it off. She wanted to make a care package.

Which meant I needed to get involved by providing the money, transportation, the whole thing. She absolutely could have done something small on her own… but she wanted me to come with her.

Even though she knew I had a lot going on. And I said yes.

But she could tell my “yes” was a little… pressured.

When we got in the car, she looked at me and said:

“Hey mom. Let’s think of this as a fun adventure together, not something where you have to drive all the way across town, okay? It’ll be fun.”

Oof.

Our kids sense what we’re thinking.

I love that she not only called me out but helped me shift my perspective.

Because she was right.

What could have been “one more thing” turned into one of my favorite moments of the week.

I watched her carefully pick out snacks and little comfort items. She made a list. Thought through details. Considered what her friend would actually love.

We talked about love languages.
We talked about her experiences at youth group.
We talked about her faith and what she's learning lately.
We gasped at prices. We laughed. We noticed cute things.

It wasn’t about checking a box. It wasn’t about just delivering a script.

It was about the time. The connection. The thoughtfulness.

And it reminded me of something in our homeschools:

It’s not always about getting the lesson done.
Or checking off the task.
Or catching up.

It’s about the moments we get together.

Those are the things that shape our kids. Those are the things they remember.

This week, my daughter inspired me.

Maybe your inspiration is already sitting across the table from you, too.

What about you? Have your kids surprised you lately with wisdom you didn’t expect?

Hit reply and tell me. I’d love to hear.

With you in the messy, meaningful moments,

Hi Reader! As we heard in our recent conversation with Dan Marcone, LMHC, on Rethinking Independence, independence is not something kids or teens suddenly achieve. It develops through the life skills they practice every day. Skills like communicating clearly, managing responsibility, handling feedback, and staying connected in relationships while growing more capable. These are the building blocks of independence, and they are learned in real moments between parents and teens. That focus on...
